Internet in everyday use: Swiss providers perform excellently with 1 and 10 Gbit/s connections

With a critical yet expert approach, zafaco has evaluated the performance of Swiss fixed-line internet providers. The results, published by IMTEST, are largely convincing, though some areas still show room for improvement.

Switzerland is known for successfully combining tradition and innovation—and that includes digital infrastructure. In European comparison, Switzerland consistently ranks among the top in both internet availability and usage. While mobile internet is gaining ground, broadband via traditional fixed-line connections remains the standard for most households.

Despite high penetration and advanced digital adoption, quality differences among providers still exist—as shown by the latest fixed-line internet provider test from Germany’s zafaco GmbH, the technology and market leader in broadband testing, in partnership with the online consumer magazine IMTEST.

Contemporary testing methodology with an eye for the essentials

Unlike basic consumer speed checks, zafaco’s methodology goes far beyond spot testing. The detailed results of the Swiss fixed-line internet test are based on over 720,000 measurements, conducted between April 28 and May 25, 2025.

zafaco also moves beyond lab conditions by simulating everyday scenarios common in Swiss households. These include multiple devices using a single internet connection simultaneously: desktop PCs, laptops, smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and an increasing number of IoT devices—collectively placing high demands on network stability and performance.

Detailed evaluation from the perspective of the Internet user

The test evaluates providers across five key performance categories and 55 quality indicators—with a clear user focus. Grades are awarded for stability, telephony, data performance, browsing, and streaming. These individual scores are combined into an overall rating to determine the best-in-test.

In Switzerland, zafaco also distinguishes between two provider categories: providers with connections up to 1 Gbit/s and those with 10 Gbit/s high-speed connections.

Results overview up to 1 Gbit/s: high performance with noticeable differences

Although fiber rollout and gigabit availability are increasing, the majority of Swiss users still rely on connections up to 1 Gbit/s. Providers tested in this category were Swisscom, Quickline, Sunrise, and netplus.

Three of the four earned a “very good” overall rating. Swisscom led with a score of 5.87, followed by Quickline (5.57) and Sunrise (5.50). netplus came in fourth with a “good” rating of 4.84, clearly behind the top performers.

Swisscom’s victory is largely due to its clear lead in network stability, an area where all three competitors have room for improvement. netplus notably lags behind in data transfer performance, while Swisscom, Sunrise, and Quickline all deliver top results in this critical metric.

10 Gigabit high speed: A frontrunner and a close field of pursuers

As speeds increase, so do the requirements and demands placed on fixed-line internet providers. However, the zafaco fixed-line internet provider test concludes that the overall quality level in the 10-gigabit high-speed internet connection segment is high.

Specifically, all four participants achieved a rating of ‘very good’. The frontrunner here is Swisscom, with an overall score of 5.90, closely followed by Salt (5.88), Sunrise (5.79) and Quickline (5.57).

Nevertheless, a detailed analysis reveals noticeable differences here too. Swisscom clearly dominates in terms of network stability, an area where its three competitors could certainly improve. In a direct comparison, Quickline shows potential for optimisation in the telephony segment, while Sunrise lags slightly behind in the high-speed Internet module.

Helping Swiss consumers find the right provider

The detailed results of the zafaco fixed-line internet provider test, published by IMTEST, offer Swiss consumers a reliable, transparent way to assess and compare provider performance based on personal needs and usage habits. This empowers users to make an informed, confident decision when selecting their broadband provider.
