Web hosting provider check

Is price the only factor that differentiates one web hosting package from another? No. Performance also plays an important role. connect and zafaco tested the performance of web hosters.

Which provider delivers the best overall package of voice quality, internet access and stable video streaming? For the Fixed-Network Test 2019, connect and zafaco have put the most important providers in Germany to the test.

Among the big players, cable provider Unitymedia overtook last year’s winner Deutsche Telekom and claimed overall victory. Telekom came second, 1&1 third.

Among the local players, the Munich city network provider M-net won ahead of EWE and NetCologne. The good news from the consumer’s point of view: connect awarded the overall “very good” recommendation five times.

With around 45,000 million transferred gigabytes, a new record was achieved the German fixed networks in 2018. This corresponds to an average data volume of around 109 GB per connection per month. At the end of last year, there were approximately 34.2 million broadband connections in Germany; almost three quarters of these used DSL technology (source: Annual Report 2018, Federal Network Agency).

For the tenth time, connect carried out its rigorous fixed-network test in close cooperation with the measurement specialist zafaco, which operates test connections in 52 cities.

In May and June 2019, 4.6 million measurements spanning the disciplines of “voice” (telephony), “high-speed internet” (data and error rates), “crowdsourcing” (provider services over an area) and “web services & web TV” (website access, gaming servers, photo uploads, TV via the internet) were carried out by the automated test systems at these locations.

As every year, the requirements were tightened and adapted to technical developments. An important new feature was extending the test to include crowdsourcing analyses. These were carried out for Germany’s 107 urban districts and cities that constitute an administrative district in their own right.
