connect Broadband & Fixed Network Test 2018: DSL, cable and optical fibre providers in a comparison test

Which fixed-network provider delivers the best overall package of voice quality, internet access and stable video streaming?

For the Broadband and Fixed-Network Test 2018, connect and zafaco have put the most important providers in Germany to the test. Last year’s winner 1&1 must concede first place to Deutsche Telekom and comes in second. They are followed by cable provider Unitymedia.

Winners among the regional providers were Munich-based Citynetz-Carrier M-net, ahead of NetCologne from Cologne. Overall, the standard was pleasingly high: The editors were able to award the “very good” test score four times.

Because of the digitalisation boom, the data volume continues to grow rapidly: With around 33 billion transferred gigabytes, a new record was achieved in the German fixed networks in 2017. Growth compared to the previous year was 47 percent. Per broadband connection and month, this thus resulted in an average data volume of more than 80 GB (source: Bundesnetzagentur (German Federal Network Agency))

But which companies offer customers the best network quality on a national and regional level?

The answers can be found in Germany’s most important fixed-network test, which connect 2018 has conducted for the ninth time in a row with its partner zafaco.

Automated test systems at 48 locations took around 4.4 million measurements in May and June 2018, analysing voice qualitydata and error ratesresponse times, the video quality of web TV and much more. Network operators active across the whole of Germany were represented with 16 connections, regional and specialist suppliers (network operators with a market share of less than 2 percent Germany-wide) with four. The devices marketed by the suppliers with the latest firmware were used on the connections.
