Federal Network Agency records progress in 5G expansion

The expansion of 5G networks is well underway in 2023. This is shown by the latest results of the Federal Network Agency's mobile network monitoring.

Coverage with 5G by at least one network operator has increased to 90 per cent of Germany (as of October 2023). A year ago, this figure was still around 79 per cent.

Deutsche Telekom, Telefónica and Vodafone Germany each achieve an area coverage with 5G of between 59 per cent and 77 per cent. In order to be able to use 5G technology, end customers must have a 5G-capable end device and a corresponding contract.

Broadband measurement records more 5G measuring points

The measurements carried out by users of the Federal Network Agency's broadband measurement/dead zone app also reflect the strong 5G expansion. The proportion of 5G measuring points has now risen to around 25 per cent (as of October 2023). In October 2022, this was still around 17 per cent. 4G is still the dominant technology, although its share is declining at around 70 per cent. In the previous year, it still accounted for around 77 per cent of all measuring points.

5G expansion is taking place gradually

The 5G expansion in Germany has so far taken place gradually. At the beginning, the existing 4G infrastructure was primarily used to expand 5G Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (5G DSS). This is a form of 5G Non Standalone (5G NSA). This form divides the available frequency spectrum for 4G and 5G technologies between the end devices dynamically and as needed.

In later phases, the expansion will increasingly focus on 5G standalone (5G SA). For the 5G standalone (5G SA) version, only 5G infrastructure is used, both in the radio access network and in the core network. Consumers therefore benefit from better network coverage and a generally higher data rate.

zafaco GmbH provides information services for the Gigabit Land Register

The information services mobile network monitoring, broadband measurement map and dead zone map of the Gigabit Land Register are provided by zafaco GmbH on behalf of the Federal Network Agency.

The broadband measurement/dead zone app was developed by zafaco GmbH on behalf of the Federal Network Agency. With the broadband measurement/dead zone app you can record the current network availability of your mobile network and thus identify any dead spots that may exist.
