Federal Network Agency expands mobile network map

The Federal Network Agency is adding the network coverage of 1&1 Mobilfunk GmbH to the interactive mobile network monitoring map and publishing information on underserved areas in the gigabit land register.

Data on the mobile network coverage of 1&1 Mobilfunk GmbH

As of today, the Gigabit-Grundbuch contains data on the mobile network coverage of 1&1 Mobilfunk GmbH. The company has been operating its own public mobile network since 8 December 2023. 1&1 also uses national roaming in the Telefónica Germany GmbH & Co. OHG network to supply its customers. In the updated mobile communications map, the network operator 1&1 therefore distinguishes between its own network and Telefónica's roaming network by colour. Before the network launch in December 2023, 1&1 only offered stationary internet access via fixed wireless access. It used its own 5G network infrastructure for this.

Map with white and grey areas in Germany

The Federal Network Agency has also expanded the mobile network map to include the white and grey areas with at least 4G coverage The map is available in the download area.

White spots are areas that have no broadband mobile coverage. Grey areas are areas that are covered by at least one but not all operators. The overview map illustrates the regions in which the seamless expansion of mobile networks is difficult, partly due to the topography. White and grey areas are predominantly located in mountainous regions, such as the Harz Mountains or the Black Forest. There are currently white patches on around two percent of the surface area in Germany and grey patches on around 15 percent.

Current coverage with 5G

91 per cent of the area of Germany is covered by at least one network operator with 5G, as of January 2024. At the beginning of the data collection in October 2021, the proportion was around 53 per cent.

Mobile Network Monitoring

All relevant data on mobile network coverage in Germany is collated in what is known as mobile network monitoring. The Federal Network Agency's interactive mobile network map shows the current mobile network coverage in Germany from a consumer perspective. The data for the mobile network map is provided by the four operators of the public mobile networks Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Telefónica Deutschland and 1&1 in accordance with the specifications of the Federal Network Agency.

The Federal Network Agency checks this data for plausibility and comparability with the results of the wireless deadzone app, among other things. In addition, they are randomly checked by the Federal Network Agency's testing and measurement service using its own measurements. The data is updated on a quarterly basis.

The mobile communications monitoring data is published at https://gigabitgrundbuch.bund.de.
